Singapore vessel hijacked off Nigerian coast now safe

SINGAPORE - A Singapore-registered container vessel was hijacked off the Nigerian Coast last night (Feb 5), the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said in a press statement.

MPA added that the vessel, the Safmarine Kuramo, was proceeding from Pointe Noire, Congo to Port Onne, Nigeria when the incident happened.

There were 25 crew on board the vessel, comprising nationals from the Philippines, South Africa, India, United Kingdom, and Thailand. No Singaporeans were on board.

At 1.20am on Saturday morning (Feb 6), Nigerian authorities secured the release of all the crew and the vessel. All crew members are reported to be safe.
