137 food outlets' licences suspended this year over hygiene lapses

SINGAPORE - A total of 137 food outlets have had their licences suspended this year over poor hygiene practices, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said in a statement today (Dec 23).

The NEA also took more than 2,700 enforcement actions against errant operators who flouted hygiene regulations after inspecting about 136,000 food premises.

Food operators convicted of hygiene lapses may be fined up to $2,000 and may have their licences suspended.

The NEA said it has issued advisories to food operators to remind them to tighten supervision of their food handlers during this festive season, as they may see an increase in customers.

The public is also reminded to engage only licensed food caterers and consume the food within the stated time.

"Safe preparation and consumption of food will help minimise the risk of food poisoning incidents," the NEA said.
