2 iconic Singapore locations open to public on second day of CNY

SINGAPORE - Members of the public were able to reminisce and take in the sights at the historic former Tanjong Pagar Railway Station (TPRS) as it was open to the public for the first time today. The official residence and office of the President of Singapore also held an open house event.

Earlier this month, the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) had announced that it will open the former TPRS property to the public on public holidays starting Feb 20, the second day of the Lunar New Year from 9am to 6pm.

Since its closure in 2011, the old railway station had only been used for private events.

In an effort to allow more Singaporeans to enjoy the heritage site, SLA also said TPRS will host a flea market later this month according to a press statement it released on Feb 9.

Channel NewsAsia reported more than 46,000 visitors turned up at the Istana.

President Tony Tan and Mrs Mary Tan were on hand to greet visitors as well.

It was also reported by Channel NewsAsia that today's visit allowed people to enter the monumental building. Visitors gained an exclusive look at the rooms where state occasions are usually held.

The Istana is traditionally open to all on public holidays.
