2014 O-Levels: 83.3% receives 5 or more passes, best performance in 20 years

SINGAPORE - A total of 30,964 candidates sat the GCE O-Level examinations in 2014 and 99.9 per cent were awarded certificates, said the Education Ministry.

The Straits Times said this year's cohort have the best results in a decade, while Channel NewsAsia said the results were at a 20-year high.

The results were released on Monday and saw 83.3 per cent of the candidates scoring five or more passes and 95.9 per cent receiving three or more passes.

Last year, 82.7 per cent of the students who took the GCE O-level exams achieved five or more passes, reported The Straits Times.

Close to 4,000 students from Secondary 4 Normal Academic course took the exams for one or more subjects in the GCE O-Level examinations and 89.5 per cent were awarded certificates.

2,133 private candidates sat the exams and 89.5 per cent have been awarded certificates.

Candidates would receive a certificate if they obtained at least a Grade 6 or better in one or more subjects.

School candidates were issued their results by their respective schools from 2pm Monday afternoon. Private candidates will be notified of their results by post.

Candidates are also able to access their results online on Monday via the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board website at http://www.seab.gov.sg from 2pm onwards.

Early on Monday morning, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong posted well-wishes on his Facebook page to all students receiving their results today.

He said: "Your path ahead is exciting and filled with opportunities."

PM Lee also encouraged the students to continue to work hard, keep an open mind and make new friends.
