21-year-old accused of stealing from corridor units

SINGAPORE - A 21-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stealing from residential units at Lorong Limau, Upper Boon Keng Road, Bendemeer Road and St George's Road.

Police identified the suspect with the help of police cameras after some residents at Lorong Limau reported that their windows had been pried open on August 9.

He was subsequently arrested at Bendemeer Road on Wednesday.

Investigations revealed that the suspect pried open the window louvres along common corridors and reached for items placed near windows.

He will face court on the charge of housebreaking and theft by night, and could be jailed up to 14 years if convicted.

The police said the home owners should take the following precautionary measures at home:

-Avoid leaving valuables near openings such as windows and doors

-Ensure that all doors, windows and other openings are well secured with good quality grilles and close-shackled padlocks

-Secure all doors and window grills before retiring to bed or when leaving your home unattended, even for a short while

-Install a burglar alarm, motion sensor light and/or close circuit surveillance camera to cover the access points into your premises.
