500 take part in Chingay Parade preview

Dressed in a white top and a red hula skirt, Madam Ngui, 70, was the oldest performer of the night.

She was part of the 500-strong People's Association Community Travelling Dance contingent that performed in the Chingay National Education Show.

For the first time, the participants, who are from different courses and interest groups from community centres and clubs islandwide, will be performing on 20 interlinked platforms of 200m.

Saturday's show, which was held at the F1 Pit Building, was watched by 10,000 students from more than 65 primary and secondary schools.

Madam Ngui, who helps out at her son-in-law's cafe, was performing as part of the Hot Hula fitness group.

Hot Hula fitness is a low impact workout inspired by dances from the Pacific Islands.

The grandmother of four, who enjoys dancing and country music, was first encouraged by her granddaughter to take up Zumba at Bukit Panjang Community Club.

Madam Ngui, who first joined Chingay as a participant in 2013, said: "I feel very happy and thankful for joining this event because I get to enjoy myself and spend time with my friends.

"When I go home after each training, I don't feel tired. Instead, I feel relaxed and happy. It's very good for you and your health."

Another senior performer, retiree Fong Kwok On, 68, performed as part of the Zumba Gold group.

Mr Fong, a first-time performer, recalled watching the Chingay Parade in Orchard Road about 10 years ago.

He has been watching the parade religiously on television since then and he jumped at the opportunity to perform in this year's edition.

HAPPY

Mr Fong said: "I wondered if I needed to go for an interview or learn how to dance and whether I needed to go for a check-up.

"I was interested, but I had a fear because of my age, as things like running wouldn't be so easy."

But after a few practices, Mr Fong has became more confident.

The grandfather of one said that his health has also improved after the training.

He added: "On stage, the joy is different because there will be people cheering me on and I'll feel proud and happy."
