59-year-old nabbed for armed robbery at Compassvale Street

SINGAPORE - A 59-year-old man who is believed to have committed a case of armed robbery at the vicinity of Blk 298C Compassvale Street has been arrested, police said in a statement on Friday.

On Oct 7 at about 3.10pm, a 16-year-old student was returning home from school when she was confronted by an unknown male suspect.

The suspect was armed with a "sharp object" and took victim's handphone, valued at about $200, before fleeing from the scene.

According to the police, the victim was unable to provide detailed description of the culprit "due to the sudden occurrence of the incident". 

Police identified the suspect from forensic evidence and with the help of CCTV footages on Thursday and he was arrested at about 4.20pm along Outram Road.

The victim's stolen phone and the object used to commit the offence were recovered. 

The suspect will be charged in court on Saturday (Oct 18). If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to 14 years and shall be liable for caning of no less than 12 strokes of the cane.
