8 Chinese nationals arrested at Jewellery Expo

SINGAPORE - Police arrested eight Chinese nationals, aged between 31 and 49, for suspected loitering with intention to commit an offence at a jewellery expo that was held on July 3.

Officers who were deployed at the expo held at Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre spotted a group of Chinese men behaving suspiciously inside the convention hall.

They then moved in to check on the group and found several plastic sachets of loose white coloured stones on some of the men and on the floor.

The group of eight was arrested for loitering and the satchets containing the loose stones were seized for investigations.

Upon completion of investigations, police said the suspects were repatriated on July 8.

Police encourage all retailers to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

i. Install sufficient CCTV surveillance at strategic locations;

ii. Be alert and take extra precautions when handing over jewellery to customers (especially those that come in pairs or groups) for viewing;

iii. Always keep the jewellery in sight, especially when it is handed over to customers before purchase. If possible, have more than one staff serve customers viewing high value jewellery;

iv. Be aware of distraction tactics; consider stationing more staff during peak periods to counteract the ruses used by perpetrators; and

v. Check and verify the authenticity of items whenever they are returned by customers.
