9 men arrested for illegal gambling

SINGAPORE - Police have arrested 9 men aged between 43 and 59, for offences under the Common Gaming Houses Act.

On Sept 22, 2013 at 11.10 pm, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division conducted an operation at a hawker centre located at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1.

A total of nine suspects were found to be gambling at a table. Gambling-related paraphernalia such as three dices and cash amounting to $1,323 were seized as case exhibits. All the suspects were subsequently placed under arrest.

Seven of the suspects will be charged in Court on Sept 24, 2013 for gaming in a public place and two other suspects will be charged for promoting public gaming. Under section 8(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act, Chapter 49, any person gaming in any public place shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months, or both.

Under section 8(4) of the Common Gaming Houses Act, Chapter 49, any person who promotes public gaming shall be liable to a fine between $20,000 and $200,000 and shall also be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years.
