Ad hoc corruption judge locked up for bribery

INDONESIA - Riau ad hoc corruption judge Asmadinata was detained by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Wednesday after being questioned as a suspect in a bribery case.

Asmadinata was detained after the KPK summoned him by force at Soekarno Hatta International Airport in Cengkareng on Tuesday night.

"He is detained at Cipinang penitentiary in East Jakarta for the first 20 days," KPK spokesperson Johan Budi told a press conference.

Asmadinata exited the KPK's headquarters after his questioning session donning an orange detainee jacket.

He refused to respond to the reporters' inquiries on his detainment.

Johan said that the judge had been charged with Article 12 of Law No.31/1999 on corruption.

According to him, KPK investigators had to summon him by force because he failed to show up for two of his prior scheduled questioning sessions.

"The investigators went to Semarang, Central Java, to summon him by force but he was not there. Then we received information that he was on his way from Medan, North Sumatra, to Jakarta. When he arrived at the airport, we arrested him," Johan said.

The KPK named Asmadinata a suspect for allegedly accepting a bribe while hearing the case against former Grobogan Legislative Council speaker Muhamad Yaeni.

Other judges handling the case, disgraced Semarang Corruption Court ad hoc judge Kartini Marpaung and Pontianak Corruption Court ad hoc judge Heru Kisbandono, are currently in serving time in prison for accepting bribes to free Yaeni of corruption charges.
