Alert resident foils attempted theft of lorry

With assistance from an alert resident, police arrested two youths, aged 16 and 17 years old, for the attempted theft of a lorry.

On Sep 11 2013 at about 2.40am, a resident reported to the Police that some youths were loitering and behaving suspiciously along Pasir Panjang Road.

Within minutes, officers from Clementi Police Division arrived at the scene detained the two suspects. Both suspects were placed under arrest following an interview. Efforts are underway to trace their accomplices. Preliminary investigations indicate that both the suspects are also believed to be involved in other theft of vehicle cases.

The suspects will be charged in Court on Sep 12 for the offence of Attempted Theft of Motor Vehicle with Common Intention under Section 379A read with Section 511 and Section 34 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, they face a jail term up to 7 years and also a fine.

Commander of Clementi Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Melvin Yong, commended the resident’s public-spiritedness and his officers for their swift response. DAC Yong advised all vehicle owners to lock the doors of their vehicles whenever they are left unattended, even if it’s for a short while, and to install anti-theft systems in their vehicles.
