Attica: Older and better

SINGAPORE - Clubs are born, you make memories, and within five or seven years, they're gone.

But it's not quite the same for long-standing club Attica.

Among the consortium of nightspots at Singapore's party central aka Clarke Quay, Attica has proven itself as one of the more popular choices and, over the weekend, it celebrated its 10 years of existence with a great bash.

I honestly didn't expect much from its highly-anticipated shindig, thinking that it was going to be another regular event inserted just to decorate its event calendar.

But I was proven wrong.

Attica, which just re-launched its newly-refurbished premises, held three special anniversary events culminating in its Electric Circus-themed finale last Saturday night.

Let's just say the affair almost completely wiped out my memory bank.

Not because it was forgettable but because the boozefest, which ended up being like a playground for clubbers, left me with close to no recollection of the night.

There was a good turnout of partygoers, but there was also ample breathing space for everyone.

Fellow reveller Amelia Palmer, a 24-year-old student, shared my sentiments: "It wasn't bad like the kind of crowded where everyone would be sticking skin to skin."

Attica's new look also grabbed the attention of regulars who turned up for the celebration.

The multi-faceted venue - Level 1 plays hip-hop, R&B and Top 40s music while Level 2 plays electronic dance and house anthems- appeared completely different and better than any of us were used to.

Miss Palmer told me: "Attica looks completely posh and classy now. Although that isn't necessarily a bad thing, I'm not accustomed to it yet.

"We used to go there all the time and felt so at home the moment we walked in. So, going into a new version of our old home was a little bit weird."

"But I'm sure we'll get used to it after some time."

The Electric Circus party surpassed my expectations and had performances from Attica's stage dancers who broke into what looked like acrobatic moves in sync with the thumping bass of the music.

Some of the familiar wait staff even applied light make-up to match the night's theme.

Let's just say this Girl Friday is curious to know how the "new" Attica will keep up the high standards that they set for themselves at their anniversary party and whether they'll last for another 10 years.

The pressure's on.
