Auxiliary cop jailed for stealing from prostitutes

In May, auxiliary police officer Pusparani Kuppusamy (right), 28, pocketed $1,430, taken from three prostitutes who had been arrested.

Yesterday, Pusparani, a Malaysian who worked as a constable for security firm Aetos, was sentenced to six months' jail for misappropriating the money on May 21.

At about 6am, three prostitutes from China were arrested on suspicion of offences under the Women's Charter and taken to Ang Mo Kio Police Division.

Pusparani was tasked with searching the women and assisting in the declaration of their property in the division's Charge Office.

She checked their belongings, which were then placed in polymer bags, before escorting them individually to a room.

As they were changing, Pusparani removed money from the polymer bags and keep it in the back pocket of her trousers.

SUSPICIOUS

But one of the women became suspicious after she heard shuffling noises and observed Pusparani placing something in her back pocket.

The women raised their concerns to other officers and Pusparani was recalled to verify their claims.

Before returning to the Charge Office, she hid the money behind a front wheel on her vehicle

When she was searched, nothing incriminating was found on her.

Investigations later revealed that she drove to Johor Baru the next day and changed the money at a money changer. She banked part of it into her sister's account and spent the rest on herself.

For committing criminal breach of trust as an auxiliary police officer, Pusparani could have been jailed up to 15 years and fined.
