Beauty queen sorry for mocking man online

SINGAPORE - A Facebook post uploaded by a Miss Universe Singapore 2013 finalist left the 25-year-old with egg on her face.

Ms Jesslyn Tan had mocked the attire of a stranger whose photo she uploaded on her Facebook page yesterday with the caption: "Holey moley. Sibei trendy worzxxz (sic)."

The man was asleep in an MRT train and was wearing a green T-shirt with a hole in it.

Many netizens came across the post, which was re-posted on several websites, including citizen journalism site Stomp. It quickly garnered hundreds of positive and negative comments, including one from the man's daughter, Ms Cindy Tan.

She responded: "He's my dad. Not everyone is as lucky as you making money based on looks. We don't have money to buy fancy clothes all the time. So what if there is a hole in the shirt? It's nothing (to be) shameful about.

"Rather, your act of laughing at others having a hole in the shirt is shameful. What if your dad is being made fun of? Think about it, Jesslyn Tan and the rest of you."

The post has since been taken down.

In its place is an apology from Ms Tan, who listed herself on her Facebook page as an RMIT Bachelor of Communication graduate who is self-employed.

The apology included the admission that the initial post was "uncalled for".

"Upon further reflection, I realise how insensitive I was, the comment wasn't meant to hurt anybody. I would like to apologise to Cindy and her family," she wrote.

"If we had all moved off a spilt second sooner there would have been an accident."
