Boat rides for wheelchair users: Learn from HK

Boat rides for wheelchair users: Learn from HK
Visitors will ride down a 483m-long man-made river and get up close to 30 species commonly found on the banks of the Amazon, including the jaguar and Brazilian tapir.

My disabled friends and I are very disappointed with the reply from Wildlife Reserves Singapore asserting that wheelchair users are not allowed on its Amazon River Quest boat ride at the River Safari ("Boat ride governed by safety Act"; last Friday).

Our political leaders have spoken so much about inclusiveness for all Singaporeans, and much has indeed been done to address the needs of people with disabilities and our senior citizens.

It is, thus, unthinkable that Singapore's latest attraction - the River Safari - has not made any provision to allow wheelchair users to enjoy the Amazon River Quest boat ride, citing safety regulations.

Surely, such boat rides can be made safe for everyone, including wheelchair users and visitors with mobility problems. I am a wheelchair user.

My disabled friends and I have visited Hong Kong Disneyland and were impressed with its wheelchair-accessible rides.

For the It's A Small World boat ride, wheelchair users with the ability to transfer were asked to transfer to a standard boat.

Those wishing to remain in their wheelchairs could wait for a wheelchair-accessible boat.

Wheelchair users could also take the Jungle River Cruise on a wheelchair-accessible boat.

A visit to Singapore's River Safari is incomplete without experiencing the Amazon River Quest boat ride.
