Booze ban in Race Course Road this weekend

Booze ban in Race Course Road this weekend

SINGAPORE - There will be a complete ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol in the Race Course Road area this weekend, said Second Minister for Home Affairs S. Iswaran yesterday.

Mr Iswaran said that this step, which was proposed by police, is being taken because the Government wants "to first stabilise the situation on the ground". "It will give the police time to assess the situation, engage stakeholders and then decide on the appropriate next steps to be taken," he said.

He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a visit to the area in the wake of the Little India riot on Sunday night.

Mr Iswaran said police officers will be in the area, especially over the weekend to ensure that the ban is complied with and that general law and order is being observed.

He said the police will assess how far and wide an area the ban will cover, as well as the ban's exact duration.
