British man arrested after bomb evacuation

LONDON - British police arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of planning a bomb attack and evacuated 50 people from a housing estate on Monday.

Officers from an army explosives squad were sent to the housing estate near the Newcastle United stadium in northeast England after "suspicious items" were found.

"The person, a white 18-year-old man, has been arrested and he is currently in custody helping with inquiries," said Northumbria Police Superintendent Bruce Storey.

"He has been arrested on suspicion of being in possession of explosives with intent to endanger life.

"We don't know this man's motivation but we do believe he intended to harm people." Following a tip-off, police searched the man's property and discovered the suspicious items, leading them to cordon off the area and evacuate several homes.

Police said they were currently piecing together information about the man's lifestyle "to gather a picture of what his motives may have been".
