Cab crashes into tree at Ang Mo Kio

A Trans-Cab taxi slammed into a tree in an accident at the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 and Cardiff Grove yesterday morning.

The 7am crash caused a traffic jam that stretched for at least 2km to the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8.

The police cordoned off one lane on the road.

Business manager Gary Haris, 40, who called The New Paper hotline, was stuck for about 45 minutes in the jam while sending his children to a childcare centre in Serangoon.

The bottleneck was caused by traffic police cordoning off the rightmost lane of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 towards Boundary Road. He said: "Traffic was so slow that my wife could put her hand out to take a photo of the accident without worry." He did not see anyone who was injured when he drove past the junction at about 8am.

On his return journey at 9am, when he passed by the same point in the opposite direction, he saw tow trucks moving the damaged taxi away.

When TNP arrived at 9.30am, there was still debris from the vehicle strewn around the scene. The tree, which the taxi had crashed into, had part its bark torn off from the impact.

A section of the road divider was also felled.

A Singapore Civil Defence Force spokesman said it was notified to the accident at 7.02am and sent an ambulance to the scene.

A man in his 40s sustained light injuries and declined to be taken to hospital.

Trans-Cab Services could not be reached for comment.
