Car Free Sundays on Civic District and CBD roads next year

SINGAPORE - Starting in February, some roads in the Civic District and the Central Business District of Singapore will become car-free in the morning of the last Sunday of each month.

The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) will be testing "Car Free Sunday" over six months, with the first to be held on Feb 28, Lianhe Zaobao reported.

Between 7am and 9am on Feb 28, the roads surrounding the Padang will be closed to motor vehicles. Parts of nearby Fullerton Road, Shenton Way and Robinson Road will be closed too.

A total of 4.7km of roads will become car free to welcome pedestrians and cyclists.

Parts of Connaught Drive and St Andrew's Road will be closed to motor traffic before 12pm, so that people can go about activities and walk around the Padang with peace of mind, the Chinese daily said.

In conjunction, National Parks Board, Health Promotion Board and Sport Singapore will be hosting several activities near the Esplanade Park and Empress Place.

A URA spokesman said that those roads were chosen because they usually experience lower traffic on Sunday mornings, and there are several sights, such as historic landmarks, along those roads.
