Centre to promote Singapore's Chinese culture

Centre to promote Singapore's Chinese culture

We thank Mr Toh Cheng Seong for his feedback ("Chinese cultural centre must have Singapore context"; last Saturday).

As the official name, Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC), suggests, the centre primarily promotes the Chinese culture of Singapore, and not elsewhere.

The plan is to develop the centre into a hub for activities and resources for all who are interested to understand, learn and participate in enriching local Chinese culture, irrespective of race.

We want to build upon our unique multiracial and multicultural heritage, and enhance inter- and intra-cultural interactions.

The piece of land where the SCCC and Singapore Conference Hall are sited is earmarked for civic and community institution projects, as classified by the Urban Redevelopment Authority, and is not solely for commercial use.

Locating the SCCC building next to the Singapore Conference Hall, home of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, will allow us to optimise land use and synergise resources between these two organisations in the promotion of Chinese arts and culture.

Since the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations is the organisation that mooted the idea of SCCC, it will spearhead fund-raising efforts by the community to share in the support of this iconic project.
