Club Avalon not closing

Club Avalon not closing

SINGAPORE - It seems super club Avalon is not closing after all. A Facebook post on the club's official page on Monday had stated the club would open its doors for "the final time" today.

But Mr Peter Coney, 58, who oversees the club's operations, said the information is wrong. The post has since been taken down. "It's just misinformation, wires were crossed... it hasn't closed. We're basically going through a series of renovation works," he said. He is chairman of a company called Crystal Pavilion Marina, which handles the operations of Marina Bay Sands nightspots Avalon and Pangaea.

The Australian said renovations would take several months and declined to give details of the works. He said that he hopes to keep the club running as long as it is practical during the renovation period.

Asked about clubgoers' comments that business was slow recently, he said: "We wouldn't be going ahead, spending money on renovations if we didn't believe it will be an improvement to customer experience."

Avalon opened in 2011 and occupies a sprawling 1,486 sq m space at one of two floating crystal pavilions at Marina Bay Sands. It is popular with expatriates and tourists.

Mr Coney said Mr Steve Adelman, the club's co-founder who launched the Singapore branch, is back in Los Angeles running the Hollywood Avalon.
