Competitors with the write stuff

The finals of the 6th National Brush and Pen Calligraphy Competition took place yesterday morning beside Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple in Waterloo Street.

Organised by the Chinese Calligraphy Society of Singapore, it saw competitors not just from Singapore, but also Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Taiwan, Macau, Hong Kong and Japan.

The 6,000 entrants were whittled down to 216 for brush calligraphy and another 216 for pen calligraphy, with four categories in each: primary, secondary, tertiary and the open category.

An eventual 214 winners were named yesterday.

In a speech at the event, Central Singapore District Mayor Denise Phua recounted the achievements of the Chinese Calligraphy Society of Singapore over the years, noting:

"In arts and culture, the teamwork of the Government, organisations and the people is needed in order for success."
