IPOH - A 53-year-old police corporal was smashed on the head with a beer bottle by a robbery suspect in Kampung Simee here.

While attempting to arrest the 28-year-old man who had entered a grocery shop at about 6pm on Thursday, the corporal was hit at the back of the head.

"He was given outpatient treatment with six stitches to the back of his head.

"He also has some injuries to his forehead," Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Sum Chang Kong told reporters yesterday.

ACP Sum said the suspect had initially entered the grocery shop to rob the place.

"A police patrol vehicle was in the area when it happened.

"The police corporal and two others then proceeded to arrest him. A struggle ensued," he said.

"The suspect, who was also wielding a knife, got his eye bruised in the process," he said.

He added that no shots were fired.

ACP Sum said police would also check whether the suspect was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, adding that he had two previous convictions.

On an unrelated incident, ACP Sum said police had solved at least five theft and house break-in cases with the arrest of a 33-year-old man in Taman Pinji Mewah at 11am on Thursday.

"We also seized a samurai sword, a knife, a laptop and a Rolex watch.

"Following interrogation, the suspect led us to two places nearby where we recovered a stolen Proton Wira and a Yamaha motorcycle," he said.

"We are also on the lookout for his accomplice," he added.
