Defence scholarships awarded to 26 recipients

SINGAPORE - Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen presented the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Merit Scholarship to 21 recipients as well as the Defence Merit Scholarship to five recipients at a ceremony held at the Sheraton Towers Thursday afternoon.

Introduced in 1983 and 2002 respectively, the SAF Merit Scholarship and Defence Merit Scholarship aim to recruit top students from each cohort of school-leavers to join the SAF and the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF). This year's scholarship recipients, who have demonstrated academic excellence and outstanding leadership abilities, will be pursuing their undergraduate studies in reputable local and overseas universities.

Upon completion of tertiary education, the SAF Merit Scholarship recipients will assume various appointments that will groom them for senior command and leadership positions in the SAF. The Defence Merit Scholarship recipients will return from their studies as Defence Executive Officers. They will take on varied job challenges in MINDEF that will hone their skills in critical defence areas and develop their potential to the fullest.

Present at the scholarships award ceremony were the parents of the 26 scholars, as well as senior officials from MINDEF and the SAF.
