Dr Tan pays tribute to 'stalwart' Woon

President Tony Tan Keng Yam on Monday paid tribute to veteran swimming official Woon Sui Kut, who died last Saturday.

"Sui Kut was a stalwart of the swimming scene in Singapore and mentored many of our national swimmers," he wrote on his Facebook page.

"He made significant contributions to the development of swimming in Singapore and internationally."

Dr Tan, who is also patron-in-chief of the Singapore Swimming Association (SSA), attended Woon's wake on Monday.

The 84-year-old died in Changi General Hospital last Saturday, a day after falling at home.

He had served as secretary-general of the Singapore Amateur Swimming Association (as the SSA was then known) from 1964 to 1999, and officiated at 10 Olympic Games (1964 to 2004).

Most recently, he officiated at the SEA Games in Myanmar earlier this month.

Woon's wake is being held at St Teresa Church, from noon till 10pm.

The funeral mass will be at the Church of The Holy Family on Thursday at 10am, followed by cremation at Mandai Crematorium Hall 2 at noon.
