Draw into the night

WHAT better way to spend a Friday night than to wander through and soak up the lights and sounds of the culture-rich streets of Kampong Glam?

Head to the Aliwal Arts Night Crawl festival tonight to experience theatre, literature, music and dance all in a heritage setting.

The people at the Aliwal Arts Centre will be presenting 13 performances, starting with the thunderous beats of the Malayan drums by NADI Singapura.

Then, all through the night, watch captivating and sensual bellydancers from The Jewelz, an all-female belly dance troupe who will be performing in the multi-purpose studio; take voice lessons from The A Capella Society; and even let your inner graffiti artist decorate the facade of the centre using projection technology.

Using a new interactive projector from Epson and making use of finger-touch capabilities whatever work an individual creates on the programme, projects in realtime almost tenfold bigger onto the two-storey building.

Manager of Aliwal Arts Centre Natalie Tan told The New Paper: "It's our second year holding this festival and it's better than ever.

With the community-based graffiti activity at the courtyard, we hope adults and kids alike will try their hand in 'painting' the centre's wall with their work."

Admission for the event, which starts at 6pm, is free.

In addition to the performances, bars, cafes and boutiques around the Kampong Glam area are offering discounts in conjunction with the festival.

There is also a contest: snap a picture at the festival and upload it on Instagram with the hashtag #aliwalnightcrawl, and you might win a staycation at The Sultan Hotel.
