DTL2 free travel to run 6 days, commuters advised not to rush: Khaw

SINGAPORE - The new Downtown Line 2 (DTL2) will kick off operations on Sunday (Dec 27) with six days of free travel, until Jan 1.

The new line which runs through 12 stations from Bukit Panjang to Rochor, is expected to ease commuters' travelling time by 20 minutes, compared to previous routes.

Minister of Transport Khaw Boon Wan wrote in his blog that staff have been working hard to ensure a smooth service, free from major incidents. Anticipating severe overcrowding due to the new line's novelty, as well as it opening during the holiday season, Mr Khaw said that extra staff will be deployed to man the stations.

He added that commuters needed to play their part as well: "In particular, do note that free service will run for six days to 1 January. So please spread out, and there is no need to rush. DTL is here to stay, and there will be plenty of opportunities to experience its wonders, including the artwork in each station."

To help mitigate overcrowding, commuters will be informed of the level of crowdedness at the DTL stations. Those keen on travelling on the line may also plan their trip via MyTransport.SG app.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong spoke at the line's opening ceremony, held at the Botanic Gardens station. He said that the new line is a step towards Singapore becoming a "car-lite city".

PM Lee added: "Ultimately, we aim to make Singapore a safe, green, car-lite city where all Singaporeans can get around the island conveniently, and connect with their friends and families seamlessly. The DTL2 opening today is a step in towards becoming that city."
