Embark on secret journeys in Singapore

SINGAPORE - A young woman returns to a beach which holds her family's glowing, romantic secrets.

Find out where it is this Friday in The Straits Times National Day Special, which will present secret journeys in Singapore.

In the Special, The Straits Times journalists and photographers travel to places on the island that feel secret or secluded.

They walk along the edge of the island and pop into emerging enclaves, for instance.

Seeking to go off the beaten track, their local travelogues offer an insider's look at Singapore.

"Singaporeans are world travellers and this year's Special shows that the Republic abounds in places to explore too," said Ms Lee Siew Hua, editor of the 20-page Special and a Life! travel writer.

While most of the pieces are exclusive print stories, this year's Special has a multimedia presence with video clips by RazorTV and film-maker Eric Khoo's Zhao Wei Films.

On Friday, the videos and several online stories can be viewed at www.straitstimes.com/ndp2013

The Straits Times has also partnered InstaSG, a local Instagram community, to highlight digital photographs of more unusual, hidden or non-touristy places.

This attracted a lively response of 2,500 entries. Eight of the best Instagram entries will be shown in print, with more going online.

Senior executive sub-editor Denise Chong, who designed the Special, said: "Certain pages are designed to be whimsically sprinkled with starlight or to be heavy with fruit, to lure you into wending your way to the shore or gardens that are secluded or secretly special to our writers."

Pick up a copy of the Special with The Straits Times on National Day and walk this way.
