Ex-Joo Chiat MP Chan Soo Sen convicted of drink driving

SINGAPORE - Former Member of Parliament for Joo Chiat Chan Soo Sen was on Thursday disqualified from driving for a year and fined $2,000 for drink driving.

He was caught by mobile police after attending a charity event at 11.55pm on July 13. A breathalyser test revealed he had 50mg of alcohol per 100ml, over the legal limit of 35mg.

Mr Chan said he had "a moment of carelessness".

He could not get a taxi to the event, so he decided to drive. After the event, he also did not ask a car jockey to drive him home. He said organisers of the charity event had toasted him.

Now a part-time business consultant, Mr Chan was MP of Joo Chiat ward in the East Coast Group Representation Constituency from 1997 to 2001 and the Joo Chiat Single Member Constituency from 2001 to 2011 under the People's Action Party.

He said he will be taking public transport from now on. This is his first traffic offence in court in the 30 over years he has been driving.
