Fire at Albert Centre, 30 people evacuated

A fire broke out at the Albert Centre Market and Food Centre at 270, Queen Street yesterday.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), which was alerted to the fire on the second storey of the building at 4.20pm, arrived at the scene within eight minutes.

About 30 people were evacuated from the building by firefighters. No one was injured.

More people are understood to have fled the building before the firefighters arrived.

The SCDF said it dispatched two fire engines, two Red Rhinos, four support vehicles and one ambulance.

The fire was put out within 45 minutes.

The SCDF said the food centre's 20m-long mechanical ventilation ducting, which is used to allow cooking fumes to escape, was burnt in the fire.
