Firefighters' event open to public for the first time

This was the first time the Singapore-Global Firefighters and Paramedics Challenge was held in full view of the public and involved members of the public in the competition.

The annual challenge started in 1993 and was called the Civil Defence Skills Competition.

This year's contest at the Singapore Expo involved more than 450 firefighters and paramedics from 15 countries, and was a two- day instead of the usual half-day affair. Participants competed in two categories - International and local.

A third category for members of the public was also introduced to highlight the importance of the community's role during an emergency.

Participants had to carry out three to four challenges involving firefighting, rescue work and first aid.

In conjunction with the challenge, international participants also attended the International Elite Rescuer Exchange Workshop which started last Wednesday and ended on Monday.
