Foreign workers help rescue baby stuck in railings

Updated 4.30pm: The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) awarded two foreign workers the SCDF Public Spiritedness Awards for their bravery in rescuing a toddler whose head was stuck in between the rails of an external clothes drying rack on Friday.

The men have been identified as Mr Subramaniam Shanmuganathan and Mr Ponnan Muthukumar.

At the award ceremony, Deputy Commander 4th SCDF Division LTC Michael Chua thanked them. MP for Jurong GRC Ang Wei Neng was also present to give out the awards and tokens of appreciation to the duo.

Two foreign workers were filmed helping to rescue a toddler whose head was stuck in between the rails of an external clothes drying rack.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a statement today that the incident happened on Thursday, Apr 23 at around 1pm at Block 371, Jurong East Street 32. They were alerted to it at 1.10pm.

Local blog Alvinology.com had featured the two videos and reported that a woman had heard the baby's screams and shouted for help.

One video shows the baby dangling and crying, trying to free herself from the frightening position.

With some commotion heard in the background of the video, one foreign worker, said to be from Bangladesh, is seen climbing up the two storeys to help the baby. Another followed soon after to assist as well.

SCDF said: "Two members of the public, who were in the vicinity, acted quickly to render assistance to the little girl. From the ground floor, they swiftly climbed up to the second floor and released the little girl's head prior to the arrival of the SCDF.

"SCDF firefighters brought the little girl down to safety using a ladder". They had sent one Red Rhino to the scene for assistance.

Passers-by can be heard in the video saying there is no one at home. The blog reported that someone had knocked on the door but there was no response.

To acknowledge the quick thinking and civic-mindedness of the two members of public, SCDF will be presenting them with the SCDF Public Spiritedness Award.
