Former law professor released from prison

Former law professor Tey Tsun Hang has been released from prison and will now serve the remainder of his five-month jail sentence in home detention. His lawyer, Mr Peter Low, told The Straits Times that Tey's release from Changi Prison on Tuesday afternoon came with two conditions: He would be allowed to leave home only between noon and 3pm, and he is not allowed to speak with the media.

Tey was found guilty in May of six counts of corruptly obtaining gifts and sex from former student Darinne Ko. He was then sentenced to five months' jail in June.

In July, his lawyers filed appeals against his conviction and jail sentence, arguing that because Tey was in love with Ms Ko, a stiff fine for his offences would have sufficed. Tey maintained his innocence despite the court's guilty verdict after a lengthy trial.

Mr Low said last night that he will submit the summary of their arguments by early next month, in time for the appeal to be heard later that month. Tey's official release date is said to be Oct 5, if he is given a remission for good behaviour.
