Four weeks in jail for drink driver

He knew he was going to drive his group of friends home after a birthday party.

But that did not stop Ng Cheng Guan from drinking "two half-glasses of red wine" at the party on Nov 20 last year.

His action had deadly consequences that night when his car collided with a motorcyclist at the junction of Jalan Bukit Merah and Henderson Road.

Yesterday, Ng, 56, was sentenced to four weeks' jail for causing the death of Mr Lionel Kiew, 24.

He was also disqualified from driving all classes of vehicles for five years.

Deputy public prosecutor Yvonne Poon pointed out that Ng "was not merely driving home".

Instead, he was also taking two other people home, which extended the period of time he would have been on the road, she said. He also widened the window of hazard that he would have posed to other road users, she argued.

CRASH

At about 11pm, Mr Kiew was riding his motorbike on Jalan Bukit Merah heading towards Queensway, said a witness who was travelling behind him.

Ng's car had stopped on Jalan Bukit Merah in the opposite direction near the Henderson Road junction.

As Mr Kiew approached the junction with the traffic lights in his favour, Ng suddenly made a right turn into Henderson Road towards Telok Blangah.

Unable to avoid Ng's car, Mr Kiew's bike hit the rear of the car.

The injured motorcyclist was taken to hospital where he died at 3.24am the next day from multiple injuries.
