Free concert by Singapore Symphony Orchestra today

SINGAPORE - There will be a free concert by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) today at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Led by SSO's Associate Conductor Jason Lai, the concert will take place at the Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage from 6 - 7pm.

This event is part of Singapore Press Holdings' (SPH) Gift of Music series, which marks SPH's 30th anniversary.

An earlier SSO lunchtime Concert on Aug 4, which was part of the SPH Gift of Music series, attracted over 700 people at the newly refurbished Victoria Concert Hall.

SSO kicked off the Aug 4 concert with Carillon de Westminister, an organ piece by French composer Louis Vierne.

It was a rare occasion for the audiences to hear the Klais Organ at VCH being played. The organ, which has a total of 2,012 pipes, formed the majestic facade of the concert hall stage.

Other highlights of the 45-minute programme then included popular classics such as Voices of Spring by Johann Strauss, Salut D'Amor by Edward Elgar, and movie themes from West Side Story and Star Wars.
