Fun run in Gardens by the Bay to raise awareness for human trafficking

SINGAPORE - Registration has opened for a 5km fun run/walk on November 30 at Silver Garden, Gardens by the Bay to raise awareness for human trafficking.

STEPS in the Park is the inaugural event of Singapore-based, not-for-profit organisation EmancipAsia, which is supported by the Singapore Inter-Agency Taskforce on Trafficking in Persons.

EmancipAsia aims to raise awareness, advocate change and empower people to take action on issues such as sex trafficking, domestic servitude and labour trafficking.

It conceived the event to help them to raise funds and awareness of these issues in both Singapore and South East Asia.

Mrs Sylvia Lee, Founder and Director of EmancipAsia said, “We are very excited to be partnering the Singapore Inter-Agency Taskforce on Trafficking in Persons, to bring this event and cause to the attention of people in Singapore. Many are unaware of how attractive Singapore is to traffickers as a destination country, given its connectivity, and ease of entry for visitors from ASEAN countries."

Ms Somaly Mam, a Cambodian advocate, activist and victim of sexual slavery from a young age, will be in attendance at STEPS in the Park as a special guest and will join in the run. Somaly, who has dedicated her life to empowering survivors, will also be available to talk to the crowd about the cause.

Participants in the first STEPS in the Park event are asked to take their first steps to meet and join like-minded people, and their first steps to take action and help make a difference to those enslaved or vulnerable to slavery.

After the run/walk, there will be live entertainment, lucky draws and merchandise stalls will be open till lunchtime.

Online registration for STEPS in the Park opens today on www.emancipasia.org/steps and the page contains all the necessary information for the event on Saturday, 30 November.
