Girl, 3, falls from 4th floor in Serangoon North

A three-year-old girl, believed to be alone at home when her grandmother went downstairs to shop, fell from a window of a fourth-floor flat on Wednesday.

The incident happened at about 12.40pm at Serangoon North Avenue 4, Chinese newspaper Shin Min Daily News reported yesterday.

A resident, who gave his name as Mr Cai, told Shin Min that he was taking his grandson home from school when he heard from his wife that people had gathered at the scene.

"I went to check and was shocked to see a little girl lying still on the floor," said the retiree who is in his 60s.

"I quickly touched her arm to see if her body was still warm."

He immediately called for someone to get a doctor from a nearby clinic, who rushed to check her condition and attach an oxygen mask.

Mr Cai added that the girl appeared to have injured her right leg.

When her grandmother saw her on the floor, she broke down and wanted to hug her.

However, she was stopped by residents, afraid that her action would hurt the girl, said Mr Cai.

The girl's mother, believed to be a primary-school teacher, also rushed to the scene shortly after, bursting into tears when she saw her.

Residents Shin Min spoke to said the child is adorable and lively.

They hope she will recover, with some saying they will pray for her.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said a girl was taken unconscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

It is understood that she was still in intensive care on Wednesday night.

Police told My Paper yesterday that investigations are ongoing.

Shin Min visited the flat on Wednesday and found that the girl's home did not have grilles fitted on its windows, which were open.

Three policemen were at the flat asking questions.

Shin Min understands that at the time of the girl's fall, her grandmother had headed downstairs to the shops and the child was at home alone.

She is believed to have fallen from the open window while looking for someone.
