Godma tells girl to be hooker

When she needed money, the 15-year-old girl turned to her godmother for help.

The godmother's way of helping?

She suggested that the Secondary 3 student sell her body. She then found a customer for the underage girl and kept some of the earnings.

Yesterday, the 45-year-old godmother pleaded guilty to procuring the girl for the purpose of prostitution, abetting a customer to have commercial sex with her and living off her earnings.

The woman, who cannot be named to protect the minor, was jailed a year and fined $4,000 on the first two charges, with the third charge taken into consideration for sentencing.

The court heard that the accused, who was then working as a quality assurance inspector, met her goddaughter on Sept 30 last year.

NEED MONEY

As they chatted, the girl said she needed money. The accused suggested that she become a prostitute.

The next day, they went to the Chinese Garden and met the woman's boyfriend, Mr Md Jewel Abdul Latif, 31, a Bangladeshi national.

Mr Jewel introduced the girl to a fellow Bangladeshi national, Md Zahangir Alam (Ronju) Ali Sheikh, 30, a marine trades worker.

The woman told the girl to have sex with Zahangir for $200 and to give her $50 from her earnings.

The girl told Zahangir she was 16 and he agreed to pay her $200 for sex.

At about 9.20pm, the four of them went to a hotel in Geylang, where the girl and Zahangir checked into a room, and her godmother and Mr Jewel into another room.

After she collected $200 from Zahangir, they had unprotected sex five times.

When they were checking out the next morning, Zahangir asked the girl to give him $50 back as he did not have any money. She obliged and later gave $50 to her godmother.

The accused and Zahangir were arrested on Oct 9.

She was charged two days later and was released on bail.

Zahangir was jailed 10 months on Dec 16 for having commercial sex with an underage prostitute.

The woman failed to show up for her court case on Feb 24 this year and was arrested the next day.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Goh Yi Ling said the woman had taken advantage of her goddaughter's trust and exploited her naivety.

District Judge Kamala Ponnampalam said the woman was instrumental in corrupting the girl.
