"Good-as-new" $2 notes will be available this Lunar New Year

SINGAPORE - "Good-as-new" $2 notes, as well as new $2 notes, will be available at retail banks from Jan 18, in time for this Lunar New Year, said the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) in a statement today.

Since the introduction of the "good-as-new" initiative in 2013, public response to the environmentally-friendly scheme led to 17 per cent more of these "good-as-new" notes being issued during Lunar New Year in 2015, said MAS.

As assistant managing director of finance, risk and currency at MAS, Mr Low Kwok Mun said, "In the three years since the initiaive was launched, we have almost doubled the amount of energy saved from printing less $2 notes."

This year, MAS will be partnering with East View Primary School to promote the intiative. Green ambassadors will share details about the "good-as-new" intiative with their classmates, families and relatives.

Mr Patrick Goh, the school's teacher-in-charge and head of department for science, added that the scheme will allow students "to be more aware of what we, as a collective body, can do and live green by playing a part in caring for our environment, apart from the usual concept of recycling”.
