Hair cut for $8: Defence Minister shares 'good deal' on Facebook

Good deals must be shared, as Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen recently did on his Facebook page.

In a post on Sunday, Dec 27, Dr Ng wrote about getting his hair cut at a neighbourhood barber shop in Toa Payoh for less than $10.

Bugs Bunny Barber, which opened in 1971, is managed by Mr Abdul Kadir, 61, and five other barbers.

In an interview with Lianhe Wanbao, Mr Abdul said he had met the MP for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC last month while Dr Ng was on a walkabout and jokingly asked if he would like a haircut.

He did not expect Dr Ng to readily agree. Before he left, Mr Abdul even reminded Dr Ng to cut his hair regularly in order to maintain its shape.

But Mr Abdul said he was surprised when the minister returned last week for a trim. He added that although the cost of a cut was $8, Dr Ng paid $10.

In his post, Dr Ng noted that he learned about Mr Abdul's life story as they started talking, touching on how Mr Abdul raised his family of five children all these years as the estate changed and developed.

Added Dr Ng: "He also told me he came from Telok Kurau Secondary School and was a classmate of my colleague Hawazi Daipi."

Dr Ng was also impressed that Mr Abdul is still charging "less than $10 for a haircut - and a great one at that!"

Mr Abdul told Wanbao that he is happy with his job which he has held for nearly half a century and doesn't plan to retire soon, although his children have urged him to.

Dr Ng's Facebook post has attracted more than 3,000 likes and 105 comments.

Among them, Facebook user Mary Yeo said her husband "has been going to Bugs Bunny Barber since his younger days. Even though we have moved out of Toa Payoh, he still goes there."

Wrote another user, Belinda Peck: "Bugs Bunny Barber is a friendly place . My son had his haircut for 12 years since (he was a) baby."

Others praised Dr Ng for showing support for neighbourhood businesses such as Mr Abdul's.

Wrote Eddie Chong: "I am so glad our MP and Minister having his hair cut at a neighbourhood barber. Keep it up."
