Haze expected to be 'unhealthy' for next 24 hours

SINGAPORE - The 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) is expected to be in the low to mid-sections of the "unhealthy" range for the next 24 hours.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) said in an update on Sunday (Sept 27) afternoon that Singapore experienced slightly hazy conditions on Sunday, with the 24-hour PSI at 78-89 at 5pm.

NEA said that some haze from central and southern Sumatra has spread to the sea areas west and south of Singapore. As winds are forecast to blow from the south and south-southwest tomorrow, hazy conditions are expected.

It also said that the 24-hour PSI may enter the high-section of the "unhealthy" range "if denser haze is blown in by unfavourable winds".

Given the forecast, NEA said that "healthy persons should reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion".

"The elderly, pregnant women and children should minimise prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion, while those with chronic lung or heart disease should avoid prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion."

In a statement on Sunday, the Government's Early Childhood Development Agency said that all lessons and programmes in child care centres and kindergartens will resume tomorrow.
