He saw crash site and got worried

His brother is a lorry driver who has been in an accident.

And he himself once witnessed a fatal lorry accident.

When project coordinator Juraime Jumahat, 36, saw an accident involving a lorry and an SMRT bus last Tuesday, he immediately remembered those incidents.

He said: "The accident seemed quite serious, so I was very worried."

He was driving to a worksite when he saw the damaged vehicles. He took a video and called The New Paper hotline.

The accident happened around 2pm at Sembawang Road towards Upper Thomson Road.

Mr Juraime noticed the driver was stuck in the lorry with blood all over his face.

The driver had to be rescued by Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officers who used hydraulic tools to free him.

Mr Juraime's tip-off led to a story being published last Wednesday.

Mr Juraime, a long-time reader of TNP, said: "I read crime news because I want to know what is happening so that I can prevent such things from happening to me."

He has had the TNP hotline number saved in his phone for at least seven years.

For Mr Umesh Kishore Tekani, 37, who runs a contractor business, his love for TNP began with the sports section.

Mr Umesh e-mailed TNP about a body at a stairwell at Jalan Tiga last Monday.

He was passing by the block when he saw police cars and this triggered his curiosity.

"When I heard that the body was found at the staircase, I wanted to know more because people rarely use it," said Mr Umesh.

From his bedroom window, he could see the stairwell and the legs of the man.

An elderly man was found dead when SCDF officers arrived around noon.

He was believed to have been the owner of a clothing shop at the 51 Old Airport Road Food Centre and Shopping Mall nearby.

Mr Umesh's story was published last Tuesday.

He said: "I contacted TNP because I read the paper every day. I love the racing section.

"I read TNP when I have coffee with my friends."
