Minister for Education Heng Swee Keat delivers a bag of groceries containing necessities, such as toiletries, biscuits and instant cereal, to Mr Lim Cher Lai, who is in his 60s.

Mr Heng was doing so as part of the Groceries on Wheels initiative organised by the National University of Singapore Society (NUSS), which distributed 2,000 such bags to needy households in the North East and South East Districts yesterday.

He was accompanied by Mr Archie Ong Liang Gay, chairman of the NUSS Community Care Sub-Committee.

More than 300 volunteers, including NUS alumni and students from Methodist Girls' School and Singapore Polytechnic, took part in this year's charity event.

Since its launch in 2010, more than 11,500 bags have been distributed across Singapore.
