How about Nominated MP for disabled community?

It is heartening to note that disabled people will get their share of generous help, to the tune of $30 million, in this year's Budget ("Breaking down the barriers"; last Saturday).

The Land Transport Authority must be lauded for catering to the needs of disabled people.

Wheelchair-friendly paths, tactile tiles in MRT stations and beeping sounds at pedestrian crossings are among the features that have helped disabled people.

But the question to ask is: What next?

I have heard of disabled MPs in other countries, but the disabled community has still not found a "voice" in our Parliament. Will the Government consider reserving a place for a disabled Nominated MP to represent the community, if a suitable candidate can be found?

There is no lack of qualified disabled candidates in Singapore, many of whom are professionals.

Disabled people are an integral part of our population. Many in the community have contributed significantly towards nation building. Let us be proud of them.
