Indonesian farmer nabbed for bomb threat at Penang airport

BALIK PULAU - Police have detained an Indonesian farmer who threatened to blow up a plane at the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas.

The man, 61, was apparently upset after being told by an airline employee that his luggage had exceeded the limit at the check-in counter.

He then flew into a rage by shouting: "Bom kapal hari ini bagi semua mati" (Blow up the plane to kill everyone today).

The employee, after getting instructions from her superior, then barred the man from boarding the 12.10pm flight to Medan yesterday.

She then lodged a police report after learning that he had booked a 6.15pm flight with another airline.

Balik Pulau OCPD Supt Lai Fah Hin said the man and his three friends were checking in at the airline's counter before he issued the threat.

He said his three friends were allowed to board the flight.

"The suspect was furious after being barred from taking the same flight as his friends. He then went over to another airline's counter to book the next flight out to Medan," Supt Lai said.

He said initial investigation showed that the suspect had been in Penang since Aug 12 and had been getting traditional treatment for urinary retention from a Chinese sinseh in Air Itam.

"Throughout the period, he was staying with a friend in Sungai Petani. He told us he was angry after being told that his luggage was overweight," Supt Lai added.
