J Y Pillay appointed new SMU Chancellor

SINGAPORE - Former top civil servant and Singapore pioneer J Y Pillay has been appointed Chancellor of Singapore Management University (SMU).

His appointment is for a term of five years.

Mr Pillay takes over the role from Mr Yong Pung How, former Chief Justice of Singapore.

He was previously also a Pro-Chancellor of SMU, and one of three Members of the University. The Members of SMU are key stakeholders of the University and play an important role in the University's overall governance structure.

Mr Pillay is regarded as one of Singapore's pioneers, helping to build the economy after separation from Malaysia in 1965.

He has held various roles in civil service including permanent secretary of the ministries of finance, defence and national development. He was also chairman of the Singapore Exchange and Singapore Airlines, and was also managing director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation.

Mr Pillay is currently the Chairman of the Presidential Council of Advisers (CPA).
