Jogger to run 100km for murdered friend

A friend of the Singaporean church worker who was murdered in Cambodia plans to run 100km in her memory.

Manager Eddy Lee, 49, is braving the gruelling Sundown Ultra Marathon to celebrate the life of Mrs Wendy Ng, who died on a mission trip four months ago.

"I wanted to make the run more meaningful... it is a way for me to remember her," he said.

The 55-year-old relief principal was found dead in her living quarters at Hope International School in Kampong Speu province, west of Phnom Penh.

Four Cambodian workers helping to build a new school compound there have been charged with her murder.

Mr Lee - who had known Mrs Ng for 25 years - has been preparing for the race by jogging for three to five hours every other day, covering up to 20km each time.

He has also hired a coach to design his training programme.

The biennial event is a test of physical endurance and strength.

Some competitors drop out before the end.

Avid jogger Goh J-ing is also taking part for a very personal reason.

The 20-year-old wants to raise awareness of cancer, which claimed the life of an elderly relative five years ago.

"It made me realise the emotional struggle that all cancer patients go through, along with their friends and families," she said.

A Charity Ambassador for the Singapore Cancer Society, Ms Goh hopes to raise funds for programmes that will improve the lives of patients and their caregivers.

"Running is my passion, and I want to use it to help people," she added.

The Sept 14 ultra marathon will be the longest that Ms Goh has ever tackled.

So far, her achievements include finishing the Standard Chartered 42km run and the Sundown half-marathon.

She initially registered for the Sundown Ultra Marathon as a birthday present to herself, but later decided to dedicate her run to her chosen cause.

She hopes to cover the 100km in less than 14 hours.
