Joyous slices of Singapore life

SINGAPORE - Graphic designer and photography enthusiast Albert Tan knew that capturing a good photo out in the open, while the haze loomed last month, was going to be tough.

But when he chanced upon a wayang stage in a field in Alexandra Road, he knew it was just the right setting for a stunning photo.

He revisited the site over several days, and he saw his opportunity on a day when the haze let up briefly. He managed to snap a shot of an elderly man, whose face was lit up in wonder.

"Wayang is an uncommon sight in Singapore and to witness it outdoors in an open field (these days) is rather rare," said Mr Tan.

The 50-year-old added that he was moved when he asked the man what he liked most about Singapore. The man replied: "It's right in front of me."

Mr Tan's shot is one of the top three in the public-entries category of a Lianhe Zaobao photo contest. His photo - along with shots from graphic designer and illustrator Ng Han Boon, 47, whose photo took top honours; and retiree Ong Beng Teck, 60, who placed third - will be part of the newspaper's Impressions of Singapore exhibition. Seven other shots were shortlisted for the finals, and will also be showcased.

Each photograph is a quintessential snapshot of life here.

The exhibition, which will also feature 80 pictures from Zaobao photojournalists, opened at VivoCity yesterday. Mr Sam Tan, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Culture, Community and Youth, was at the event.

Mr Goh Sin Teck, editor of Lianhe Zaobao, said: "We hope that the photographs we have selected will touch people's hearts and bring about special memories."

The Impressions of Singapore exhibition is on at VivoCity until Sunday. It will then move to 112 Katong, followed by Jem and Chinatown Point respectively.
