Kovan slayings: Cop remanded for another week

SINGAPORE - The policeman charged over the Kovan double murder case is to be remanded in custody for another week while psychiatric tests are completed.

Senior staff sergeant Iskandar Rahmat remained expressionless on Friday during a five-minute court appearance via video-link from Changi Prison.

The police prosecutor had applied for the 34-year-old to be held for a further week "for the completion of the psychiatric assessment".

District Judge Kessler Soh granted the application.

Iskandar has been charged with murdering car workshop owner Tan Boon Sin, 66, and his 42-year-old son at a terraced house in Hillside Drive on July 10.

The body of the younger victim, businessman Chee Heong, was found on the road outside Kovan MRT station after being dragged for a kilometre under a car.

Iskandar, who has been with the police force for 14 years, was arrested in Johor Baru two days later, after a 54-hour manhunt.

Representing him in court on Friday was defence counsel N. Sudha Nair. His other two lawyers are Mr Ferlin Jayatissa and Mr Rudy Marican.

They were hired by his family members.

His case will be heard again next Friday.
