Lasalle students win $10k for best anti-theft bicycle bay design

SINGAPORE - A bicycle security device designed by students from Lasalle College of the Arts has won the Bicycle Bay Design Competition organised by Singapore Police Force (SPF) and the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC).

The 3 students, Ms Joanna Christie Lee, Ms Yanti Agustin, and Mr Inigo won for themselves a $10,000 cash prize and trophy, SPF said in a press release.

The other four finalists also received cash prizes ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 from Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr Masagos Zulkifli.

Organised by the SPF and NCPC to tackle theft of bicycles, the Bicycle Bay Design Competition sought to leverage on the creativity of the community to design a secure bicycle bay where bicycles would be less prone to theft.

More than 150 designs were received, SPF said.

The Anti Theft Public Education and Awareness exhibition was also held in conjunction with the competition. The exhibition showcases new crime prevention posters and initiatives.

In addition to the Bicycle Bay Design Competition, prizes were also awarded to the top three schools in the National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) Crime Prevention Competition 2013. As part of the competition, NPCC cadets were required to distribute bicycle security labels, share preventive measures with bicycle owners as well as submit a report on their learning experience during the entire period of competition.

The winners were determined by the number of bicycle labels distributed and the quality of the experiential reports submitted. The top 3 schools were Catholic High School; Presbyterian High School; and Pasir Ris Secondary School respectively.

Members of public may visit the exhibition at Orchard Central this weekend to learn more about crime prevention measures and view the five bicycle bay design prototypes.
